Eardrum consists of two parts – pars tensa (main part) and pars flaccida (the smaller part). When the eardrum or tympanic membrane (eardrum) is located below or pushed inwards from its normal position is called as Eardrum retraction. Causes of eardrum retraction are an infection in the middle ear, frequent attacks of cold, fluid discharge, auditory tube infection, rupture of eardrum due to jerk or trauma. Symptoms of eardrum retraction are hearing sensitivity, earache and fluid discharge from the ear. Severe cases may require treatment from ENT specialist.
