This is a medical condition of middle ear, wherein a breakage or rupture happens on the eardrum, the tympanic membrane. If the problem is left uncared, it can lead to serious middle ear ailments and to the ultimate point, the hearing loss. Tympanic membrane divides the external ear from the internal parts, and is more or less similar to body skin. All though the eardrum rupture will get cured naturally within a few weeks, it is always advisable to see the doctor. This will keep you away from the possible severe conditions that may arise because of negligence.
The Tympanic membrane performs two major tasks. At the outset, it correctly grasps the trembles created because of the sound waves, and then straight away translates them into nerve stimulus and passes into the brain. The second task of Tympanic membrane is to keep the middle ear sheltered and protected from various external threats such as water, foreign bodies, bacteria, etc. The innate quality of this membrane is disinfection; however, when perforation or damages happen, this quality is lost and the area gets infected. Injuries that happen to head can lead to the rupture of eardrum, which may lead to further complications. Another key reason that triggers the damage of Tympanic membrane is of course, bacterial infection. Damages can also occur because of the external pressure while cleaning the ear canal using ear buds. In the same way, when foreign bodies enter the ear, the Tympanic membrane gets ruptured. A further reason for the eardrum rupture is the increased air pressure produced within the inner ear. The general term given for this is ‘barotrauma’. Tasks like diving or high altitude traveling can cause this condition, because of the possibility of air pressure difference.
